Tip from a bike thief

Amèlie her bike got stolen.
She got it for her birthday.
So we thought.
Her mother saw the bike being dragged out of the water by communal services last friday. Some drunk threw her bike in the canal, just for fun.
Yes in Amsterdam we have a department for retrieving bikes from the canals. Now her bike is unusable.

We bought a new bike for her yesterday evening.

25,000 : That's the number bicycles that end up in Amsterdam's canals  each year.
Oddly, they say only 8,000 bikes are pulled out of the canals annually. It sounds like there are quite a few bicycles still lurking under the waters.
A few weeks back, I wrote about the prototype for an unstealable bike.

Today a new tip. From a former bike thief.
Please share it with your friends.
"Position your tire valve next to your lock. That way it is nearly impossible to steal your bike without damaging the valve. Bike thieves also don't flat tires." - bike thief
Why?
Thieves break off your bicycle stand, then wiggle it between the tire and the lock and to eventually break the lock. If you position the valve next to it, it becomes very hard to break the lock without breaking the valve.
The disappearance of Amélie her bike would not have been prevented this way of course. Some sick asshole(s) just picked it up, crossed the streets and threw it in the canal. Karma wil get you, I have no doubt!

To prevent that, always lock your bike with a second sturdy lock to something like a bike rack or a pole.
